What Does Shower Door Glass Replacement Cost in San Diego?

Replacing one shower glass panel in San Diego runs $280 to $1,100, against $1,450 to $2,600 for a whole new frameless door. If the hardware is sound, a single panel is by far the cheaper answer, and it is what we recommend most of the time.

Glass Panel Replacement Prices

Panel TypeTypical Installed PriceNotes
Sliding door glass with existing frame$280 - $650Cheapest replacement. Glass swapped into the frame that is already there.
Fixed frameless panel, 3/8 inch$350 - $750No moving parts, so no hinge load to worry about.
Frameless door panel, 3/8 to 1/2 inch$500 - $1,100Door glass carries the hinge load and has drilled holes, which is why it costs more.
Patterned or frosted glass+15% to 30%Obscure patterns cost more and lead time is longer.
Tinted glass (bronze, gray)+15% to 30%Matching an existing tint is not always exact on older glass.
Low-iron panel+$120 to +$350Removes the green edge so a new panel blends with low-iron glass that stayed.
Curved panel replacement$900 - $2,200Bent glass. Needs re-templating, and the radius must match the original.

What a Panel Replacement Includes

When Glass Must Be Replaced, Not Repaired

Any chip or crack in tempered glass

Tempered glass stores internal stress. A nick at the edge or a star crack can release the whole panel without warning, sometimes days later. Tape is not a fix and no reputable shop will seal over it.

Etched glass

Hard water chemically etches the surface. Once it is scarred, polishing removes glass and leaves a wavy surface. Replacement is the only real answer in a hard-water city like San Diego.

Fogged double-pane units

Seal failure between panes cannot be repaired. The unit is replaced.

Turnaround

Tempered glass must be cut, edged, drilled, and tempered to order. Typical turnaround is 7 to 12 business days, longer for tinted, patterned, low-iron, or curved panels. The swap itself is usually under two hours.

Pricing Questions

Can you match a 20-year-old tinted panel?

Close, usually not exact. Dye lots and manufacturers change. If the two panels sit side by side the difference can show in bright light. We tell you that before ordering.

Will insurance cover a broken shower panel?

Sometimes, depending on the cause and your deductible. Most homeowners pay out of pocket because the panel costs less than the deductible.

Is it cheaper to replace one panel or the whole door?

One panel, nearly always, as long as the frame and hardware are sound. A full door only makes sense when the frame is corroded or the hardware is failing too.

Why did my tempered glass shatter on its own?

Usually an edge chip that went unnoticed, or binding against the frame as the house settled. Tempered glass under stress fails suddenly and without a clear impact.
